Spain is one of the culturally richest countries in Europe, and one of the crown jewels is Barcelona. There are around 55 museums in Barcelona that cover a plethora of subjects including art, history, architecture, science, sports, war, and the seas.

  1. Basilica of the Holy Family

The architecture in Barcelona is heavily influenced by the works of Antonio Gaudí, and one of his greatest creations is the Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family. This huge neo-gothic temple started in 1882 and is still being built; it is one of the most visited attractions in Barcelona, receiving around two million visitors each year. It’s a fascinating place that feels almost like a living being.

Once inside the Basilica you can visit the museum, which is dedicated to the history and construction of the Basilica, and learn about Antonio Gaudí’s life.

  1. Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art

The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (in Catalan, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, or MACBA) is dedicated to works of art that were made during the second half of the XX century. This museum was based on the Museum of Modern Art of New York. It encompasses three buildings: MACBA’s main building, designed by famous American architect Richard Meier; the Convent dels Àngels (Convent of the Angels) and the Documentation Center.

The MACBA houses around five thousand works of art created from the second half of the XX century until now, and if focuses on giving the visitors a critical vision of Art, providing them with entertainment alternatives while creating interactive activities that includes seminars, workshops and presentations, giving a whole new treatment to the museum experience.

  1. National Art Museum of Catalonia

The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, or MNAC, is famous for its collection of Romanesque art, which is considered the most complete and varied of the world. This is one of the biggest museums in the city, and houses around two hundred and fifty thousand works of art.

It was built in 1990, and it houses the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Art of Catalonia. Other collections were added after that, such as a numismatic collection, another one of prints, and a photography department. The museum also houses a book store, where you can find many copies of books in English.
